Find Your Voice Again – Practical Tips for Stronger Speech
For many individuals living with Parkinson’s disease, maintaining a strong and clear voice can be a challenge. Vocal muscles, like all muscles, can weaken over time, but with the right exercises and supportive habits, it's possible to regain strength and confidence. Here are some practical strategies to help keep your voice strong and clear:
1: Daily Voice Exercises:
LSVT LOUD Exercises: Focus on loud, high-energy speaking to strengthen vocal muscles.
Sustained Phonation: Hold a strong, clear 'AH' sound for as long as possible, aiming to increase your time gradually.
Pitch Glides: Start at your lowest comfortable pitch and glide up to your highest, then back down, to stretch and strengthen your vocal range.
2: Breath Control
Diaphragmatic Breathing: Breathe deeply from your diaphragm, not just your chest, to support a fuller, more resonant voice.
Counting Practice: Try counting loudly from 1 to 20 on a single breath to improve control.
3: Vocal Hygiene:
Stay hydrated – drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can dry out your vocal cords.
Use a humidifier at night if the air is dry.
4: Helpful Nutrients:
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fish like salmon, chia seeds, and walnuts, these can support brain function.
Vitamin D: Supports muscle function and overall health – consider daily sun exposure or a supplement if needed.
B Vitamins: B1, B6, and B12 are known for supporting nerve function and overall energy levels.
5: Mind-Body Connection:
Lion’s Breath Exercise: Inhale deeply, then exhale forcefully with a wide-open mouth and tongue out – it’s a great vocal warm-up!
Stay positive – confidence in your voice can improve your overall speech quality.
