Spotlight Topic: Recognizing the Signs of Swallowing Issues

Dear Readers,

Swallowing is something most of us take for granted, but for those with swallowing difficulties, each bite and sip can present a significant challenge. Early recognition of swallowing issues is crucial for effective intervention and improved quality of life. In this edition, we'll highlight some common signs of swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) and share the inspiring story of Ryan, who reclaimed his voice and swallowing abilities.

Signs of Swallowing Issues (Dysphagia)

- Coughing or choking while eating or drinking

- A frequent indicator of difficulty coordinating breathing and swallowing.

- Throat clearing after swallowing

- May signal residue or food getting 'stuck.'

- Wet or gurgly voice after eating or drinking

- Can indicate food or liquid is entering the airway.

- Frequent respiratory infections or pneumonia

- A potential sign of silent aspiration, where food or liquid enters the lungs without obvious choking.

- Feeling of food getting stuck in the throat or chest

- Known as globus sensation, this can occur even without actual blockage.

- Weight loss or dehydration

- If a person avoids eating or drinking due to discomfort, they may become malnourished or dehydrated.

- Drooling or poor oral control

- Difficulty managing saliva or food can point to muscle weakness or neurological issues.

- Heartburn or chest discomfort

- May indicate a reflux issue contributing to swallowing

Did You Know?

Hummingbirds, like those in our logo, are small but mighty, swallowing hundreds of times a day as they sip nectar. This reminds us of the strength it takes to overcome swallowing challenges, one small step at a time.

Thank you for being a part of our journey to empower every bite, sip, and breath.

Warmly,

The Star Center Foundation Team
