First Tastes Begin with Fingers & Water!

Why Fingers First?

or toddlers and even babies starting on their feeding journey, hands are powerful tools. Before spoons, bites, or even plates—fingers help little ones explore, feel, and trust new textures. Allowing them to get messy and involved helps with both sensory processing and oral development.

Water: The Magical First Step

At the Star Center Foundation, we often begin with water—not for drinking, but for play! Here’s why:

  • Safe and simple

  • Familiar and non-threatening

  • Great for lip closure, tongue movement, and oral coordination

  • Encourages splashing, licking, smearing — all part of feeding readiness!

Try This at Home:

  • Set your toddler at the sink or in a high chair with a shallow bowl of water

  • Dip fingers in and tap lips

  • Show them how to "kiss" the water, make silly sounds, or chase droplets with their tongue

  • Try adding a splash of lemon or fruit juice for gentle taste exposure

Parent Tip:

Don’t rush to wipe. Let them linger in the mess—this is where the learning happens.

Starter Tools to Have on Hand:

Small soft washcloth or baby toothbrush

  • Ice cube with a tiny fruit smear

  • Finger paints made from yogurt or pudding

  • Open cup with just a sip of water to dribble and explore

Remember:

Early feeding isn’t just about nutrition. It’s about comfort, curiosity, and connection. Let them lead with their fingers and follow with their smiles.
